The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.
