The Boss Maresca Describes Pre-Match Period as His 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' at the Club

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to Saturday's triumph against Everton represented "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian offered a puzzling message in his post-match media briefing even after earning a 2-0 win at home courtesy of finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those crucial points lifted Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the atmosphere after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's drought without a win to consecutive outings.

Yet, when asked about the full-back's assist and general performance, Maresca surprisingly disclosed his frustration over the previous 48-hour period within the organization.

"The way the squad want to develop has been fantastic and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with a host of problems, they are performing admirably after a complicated week," he stated.

"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the worst because a lot of people failed to back us."

Pressed on the specifics, the former Leicester City boss continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When questioned if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "In general. In general," before specifying when queried if it was directed towards fans or the press: "I love the fans and we are very pleased with the fans."

Injury and Disciplinary Woes

Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's ongoing fitness and disciplinary problems, noting they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I truly commend the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are performing brilliantly. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to appreciate because the effort from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's win over Everton consolidated their position in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled next week.

Speculation Over Maresca's Comments

It was unclear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea head coach.

In that period, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at Cobham, attended a pre-game news conference where he seemed at ease, and secured a win over an high-flying Everton team.

It was unclear whether any particular media reports had unsettled him, if online discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an matter related to the club's fans, a section of which have still have yet to fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
