Study Shows Over the Vast Majority of Natural Medicine Books on Online Marketplace Potentially Written by AI

An extensive study has uncovered that AI-generated text has penetrated the alternative medicine publication segment on Amazon, including products marketing cognitive support gingko formulas, fennel "tummy-soothing syrups", and "citrus-immune gummies".

Alarming Findings from AI-Detection Investigation

Based on scanning over five hundred titles released in Amazon's natural medicines section during January and September of 2024, analysts determined that 82% appeared to be authored by AI.

"This represents a troubling disclosure of the sheer scope of unmarked, unconfirmed, unsupervised, potentially automated text that has completely invaded Amazon's ecosystem," commented the investigation's primary author.

Specialist Worries About AI-Generated Health Advice

"There's a substantial volume of herbal research available right now that's completely worthless," commented a medical herbalist. "Automated systems cannot discern the method of separating through the worthless material, all the nonsense, that's totally insignificant. It would lead people astray."

An example of the seemingly AI-written titles, Natural Healing Handbook, currently maintains the No 1 bestseller in the marketplace's skincare, essential oil treatments and natural medicines subcategories. Its introduction touts the book as "a toolkit for personal confidence", urging users to "turn inward" for answers.

Doubtful Author Credentials

The writer is listed as Luna Filby, containing a marketplace listing describes the author as a "35-year-old herbalist from the seaside community of Byron Bay" and creator of the enterprise My Harmony Herb. Nonetheless, none of this individual, the company, or related organizations seem to possess any internet existence beyond the platform listing for the title.

Identifying Artificially Produced Text

Analysis noted several indicators that indicate potential automatically created natural medicine material, featuring:

  • Liberal use of the nature icon
  • Nature-themed writer identities including Flower names, Plant references, and Herbal terms
  • Mentions to disputed natural practitioners who have advocated unsupported treatments for significant diseases

Larger Trend of Unchecked Automated Material

These publications form part of a broader pattern of unchecked automated text available for purchase on the platform. Last year, wild mushroom collectors were warned to bypass wild plant identification publications marketed on the platform, ostensibly created by chatbots and containing questionable guidance on how to discern poisonous fungi from edible ones.

Calls for Control and Marking

Business leaders have called for Amazon to commence marking automatically produced text. "Each title that is completely AI-created should be marked as AI-generated and low-quality AI content should be removed as an immediate concern."

Responding, the platform commented: "We maintain listing requirements governing which titles can be made available for sale, and we have preventive and responsive methods that help us detect content that contravenes our requirements, irrespective of if artificially created or otherwise. We commit considerable manpower and funds to guarantee our requirements are complied with, and eliminate publications that do not adhere to those standards."
