Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and anticipate tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Message Exchange
The recently released communications showed that the economist exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before his 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it accepted Summers' determination to step down.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the Board," the organization remarked.
Legislative Background
This news comes after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to pass a measure that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its records on Epstein.
The bill will subsequently move to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has said he plans to endorse the legislation, after modifying his view on the issue following pushback from his supporters.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the legislative panel days ago included numerous high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The messages indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to introduce the academic to notable international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were made available with the wider community, Summers said he took "complete accountability for my misguided decision to maintain communicating with the financier".
He added that he desired "to restore trust and repair bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Career Background
The professor served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles recently on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where the professor was a senior fellow, verified that the economist was no longer affiliated with the group.
The former official became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO the company leader.
